<외부로부터> 시리즈에서 “보이지 않는 불확실성이 어떻게 시각화될 수 있는가”를 고민했다면, <과거로부터> 시리즈에서는 ‘시간성’을 추가한다.

유화는 온도, 습도, 염료, 페인팅 미디엄 등의 요인으로 건조시간이 일정하지 않다. 특히 이전 레이어와 최근 레이어 사이 건조시간의 차이는 그림의 크랙을 만들어낸다. 나는 이러한 현상을 적극적으로 작품에 드러내고자 한다.

<외부로부터> 시리즈를 제작할 때처럼, 캔버스 위에 커다란 색면 레이어를 먼저 올린 후 반투명한 레이어로 덮는다. 과거의 그려졌던 흔적들을 길잡이 삼아 처음보다는 더 작은 새로운 색면을 그리고, 이 과정을 반복하여 최종적인 색면 형태로 접근한다. 단일 색면이 다중 레이어를 얻으면서 ‘세 가지의 다른 색면’으로 나눠지게 되었다. 나는 이 과정에서 색면 레이어가 크랙이 발생하게끔 유화의 물성을 고려하여 작업하였고, 최종 형태에서는 무수히 많은 크랙이 색면 위에 나타났다. 나는 이 그림을 그리는 과정을 영상에 담았고, 영상을 참고하지 않더라도 최종 색면의 크랙에서 시간성을 읽을 수 있을 것이다.

그림을 이해하는 시간은 대개 그 그림을 바라보는 짧은 순간이라고 한다. 나는 내 시각언어가 짧은 찰나가 아닌 ‘시간’이라는 차원을 작품 속에 혼재시키고 싶었다. 우리가 4차원에 존재하는 한, 불확실성조차 필연적으로 과거로부터 비롯되기 때문이다.

If I had contemplated on how "invisible uncertainty can be visualized" in the <from outside> series, in the <from the past> series, I introduce the element of 'temporality.'

The drying time of oil paintings is not consistent due to factors such as temperature, humidity, pigments, painting medium, etc. Especially, the difference in drying time between previous layers and the most recent layer creates cracks in the picture. I actively aim to manifest this phenomenon in my artwork.

Similar to the process of creating the <from outside> series, I start by applying a large color layer on the canvas and then covering it with a translucent layer. Using traces left by the past layers as a guide, I paint a new, smaller color layer than the initial one, repeating this process until approaching the final form of the color layer. As a result, a single color layer acquires multiple layers and is divided into 'three different color layers’. I considered the properties of oil paint in this process to intentionally induce cracks in the color layers, and in the final form, numerous cracks appear on the surface. I captured this drawing process in a video, and even without referring to the video, it should be possible to perceive temporality in the cracks of the final color layer.

The time to understand a painting is often considered a brief moment while looking at the picture. I wanted to incorporate the dimension of 'time,' not just a fleeting moment, into the artwork with my unique visual language. As long as we exist in the fourth dimension, even uncertainty inevitably arises from the past.
