THE LIBRARY OF ARCHIVES
THE LIBRARY
The aim of the project was to design the library as a repository for print and digital media types, specifically featuring redundant media types. Based on a site in Potts Points facing the water, the project extends into the the existing carpark and rooftop garden.
The program is split into four main categories of ‘catalogue’, ‘display’, ‘promenade’ and ‘learn’. The catalogue and display spaces are used to store and access books, materials and media. The promenade acts as the central circulation passage connecting all the categories featuring a ramped stairway for events and casual study nooks, this space is exposed to the sandstone wall to the East of the site, allowing for a connection to the heritage and local history. The learn space extends into the existing carpark, providing more silent and focused group and individual study spaces for both print and digital media, open a central atrium void allowing for increased natural light and visual connections.
The interior promenade ramp, is reflected on the exterior through the use of a landscaped ramp that connects from the carpark rooftop garden around the building to the ground on the road, allowing for increased accessibility to the McElhone Stairs to the South of the site. This space allows opportunities for casual study or relaxation in the outdoors and can also be used for community gatherings and events.
