I took a course in Exhibit Design my senior year because I was very interested in the work I did with the Smithsonian. The class taught me more about the planning and preparation that goes into creating proper exhibits. We concepted new installations and fabricated scale replicas of museum space with new artwork.
An entire exhibit was devoted to the Red Fox. The proposed space was a 40' x 80' room and was to be done in 1/2" scale. The artwork and layout of the exhibit was up to my discretion. I started by designing an abstract fox head made of repeating triangles. It was built in CAD and the file was sent to be lasercut in acrylic. The inside of acrylic was painted which created an impressive gloss look on the outside. The pieces were then assembled like a puzzle and the exhibit took shape.
Inside there are a number of display areas including description, culture, ecology, habits, and art. Viewers arrive in the middle of the exhibit area through a dark tunnel. They are free to explore everything around them in whatever order they please which does not inhibit flow. Once satisfied with the information they learned, they walk down the slanted plane and examine the fox structure from the outside.
