London Bridge Nursery Rhyme Postcard Designs

This is a proposed campaign of three postcard designs based on the nursery rhyme “London Bridge Is Falling Down.” Inspiration for the design stems from vintage postcards found in different locations throughout the world. This includes the two typefaces created for this campaign as well as the illustration of the London Tower Bridge. Inspiration was also taken from Telegramme Paper Co.’s “Greetings From London” postcard in that the image of the bridge was included inside the word “London.” The postcards are meant to be seen as a progression of the bridge falling as indicated by the changes in the illustrations and phrasing on each postcard.
The target audience would be tourists visiting the London Tower Bridge or individuals who enjoy the nursery rhyme “London Bridge Is Falling Down.” The target audience will expect a design that commemorates their place of travel through illustration and typography. Each of the three postcards follows conventions of traditional postcard layout design as they are four by six inches large. The backs of the postcards also have a space for the individual’s address, space for a written message, and space for a stamp.
The limited color palette utilizes vibrant split-complementary colors of blue-violet, orange, and red-orange to contrast with the somber scene of a collapsing bridge. The bridge and “London” typeface were created using shapes while the phrasing’s typeface was created using paths that were converted to shapes. There is continuation within the overlaps of the phrasing’s white type and the “London” type as well as in the word “London” that is entirely connected. There is a hierarchical layout to the type that signifies the importance of the word/words.
