The Signs of Dyslexia: My Experience

PSA Campaign: The Signs of Dyslexia During Childhood

The objective of this project was to create a series of three, professional quality, print ad posters that could be used in a Public Service Announcement (PSA) print campaign. These posters will promote an important issue or topic that affects individuals and communities.

The issue or topic I wanted to display and bring attention to is dyslexia. It is a learning disability that I personally struggle with. I showed signs of dyslexia from a very early age. My parents were very concerned I really struggled to read and had a hard time grasping concepts. When it came to spelling I would mix up letters because they were similar in shape and I often flipped letters. This also was very present when it came to math. I knew how to calculate numbers, but when I wrote my answers the numbers were often flipped .

The goal of these posters is to display where I struggled in school and to help other parents and teachers know the signs. My elementary school teachers didn't believe that I was dyslexic, but that I just slow to grasp concepts. I know that if I would have had the proper help in elementary school, I would have had a much easier time learning and grasping topics. I want kids like me to know that they can be successful and that parents and teachers need to advocate for their kids. I'm incredibly grateful that my parents knew the signs and believed that there was an underlying reason why school was so difficult for me.

The following posters represent the signs I displayed. I wanted to focus on a particular year that was hard for me. I chose third grade, because that year I learned new concepts like multiplication. The biggest challenge for me is when letters and numbers are similar shapes. That is what the middle poster represents. Letters such as d,b,q, and p have always been challenging, Numbers such as (6 & 9), (3 & 8), and (2 & 5). They each look similar if they are flipped around. The last image shows more about this struggle.
