Grows in Rows Seed Tape Packaging

The Brief
Redesign packaging for existing products that require tools, such as scissors to make it accessible without the use of tools. Accessibility in packaging must cover, opening, closing, storage and disposal.

Grows in Rows: Seed Tape
2014 Southern Cross Packaging Designs Awards Entry
The design I have proposed is essentially one unit that doesn’t need to be opened and eliminates the extra effort of separating individual strips. Inspired by a pack of Hubba Bubba Bubblegum Roll, I considered simply rolling the seed tape and dispensing it like the gum roll and found it very successful. A few changes to the design of the packaging to make the dispensing process easier and changing the plastic material to make it more sustainable would be needed.
I wanted to design the packaging so it didn’t need to be opened, and efficient enough that the contents didn’t need to be handled. The opening process is a simple perforated pull tab which is attached to the beginning of the roll, when you pull it, it also releases the tape and sowing instructions. As I didn’t want there to be a need for the constant opening and closing of the packaging the dispensing mechanism works in a way that seeds can be pulled through but can not fall back through. Tape is then held there until it needed again for easy storage.

Digital Mockup
Labels
I aimed to create a simplified, friendly brand that stood out from the traditional seed packages but still embodied that traditional gardening feel. I took inspiration from old high tea crockery and the simple, classic style of Crabtree and Evelyn. I produced a bold, simple logotype that is easy to read paired with a clean script typeface for the seed name, making it easily identifiable. The simple earthy colour palette and botanical sketch of the plant the seed will grow to softens the overall feel of the brand, making it more appealing to the consumer.

Mock Up
With a product that is completely degradable I wanted to reflect that sustainability as closely as possible by using materials that were as environmentally friendly as possible, A recycled moulded pulp product is used to create the package which can then be recycled itself.

Using the guidelines provided on the Australian Packaging Covenant website I tried to keep my package and label design as accessible as possible to all consumers.
- It is easy to grip and hold: 90mm radius x 30mm depth therefore the grip span required is small.
- Does not require the use of tools with no sharp edges
- Only one action is required to release product and does not require simultaneous actions.
- Opening tab has a sufficient grasping points 15 x 30mm with perforations and only one angular movement for removal.
- The cardboard pulp material has a good texture to stop slipping.
- Instructions are presented in an orderly, easy to follow way, san serif and not smaller then 9pt.
