This app design prototype was created for a graphic design class project. Our assignment was to design an app that solves a need of college students. I decided to make an app to help college students decorate their dorm rooms to make them feel like a home away from home. Our research steps required making storyboards to show how an app could solve this real-life problem, and studying effective app designs to plan out what our app could look like and what our app needs to solve our problems. Lastly before moving on to digital drafts, I created a storyboard to demonstrate how a user would be onboarded to the app, how they would navigate to the different pages, and how the app could be animated.
Storyboard for app design
I chose the name Dorm Depot and an orange and white color scheme to parody Home Depot which helps communicate the app’s function. Many pages emphasize images to best inspire students how they want their dorm room to appear. During critiques, my classmates responded well to my drafts, and they could tell that the purpose of my app was to help students decorate their dorm, so I decided to keep my app design image-focused and carry onward with my design ideas.
Digital drafts
Dorm Depot is an app that can successfully help students decorate their dorm room by showing users posts that inspire dorm room decorations. The clean layout of the app helps the user focus on the images. The app’s theme is also reminiscent of Home Depot, which helps remind the user of the app’s function.
