week 1 and 2 (ROBOTS)

week 1 recycled robots
I first kit-bashed a robot out of a chunk of wire and war miniature limbs this first robot would as a presses for there eyes, style and paint scheme. for our first week I collected materials from my recycling card, milk tops, plastic containers. I was really interested in mixing joints with my robots first using Lego technique cup and ball joint's as a cheaper material, I planned to cover the joints with fabric, however I eventually thought up the idea of mixing and matching parts to create whole new robots.
cutting the plastics with a wire saw and melting in halls for joints with my soldering iron, I used these tools to create smooth parts.
here I used card over plastic measuring cups that I sawed in half and melted hole for joints to be glued in.
for a main body/hip of the quad legged, I used a pringils can and for the legs I used several TITAN liquid bottles and lids.
I used extra gum containers for the torso, flipping the lid and adding rivets, I also liked the idea of a mono eye.
for these hands I used more plastic measuring cups for its wrist. wire and card to make fingers 3 digits for each hand and 3 possible bends per finger mirroring our own.
I was inspired from my first robot incorporating weapons into the robots such as missile launchers from bullet holders to a mixture of containers for a cannon look, I've also used the cannon as a head and/or eye.
this is a primaries marine, that I painted and added details with green stuff near the end of 2018-19. the marine inspired some of my paint scheme for a weathered and damaged sci-fi solider look.
after making every part I cover there joints and sprayed a coat of primer, I would then copy my first robots paint scheme keeping with orange as a main colour, I scratched the edges with silver paint to convey a wavered look which added some depth and character these robots were working for years not fresh of the factory floor.
here's a few examples of the various robots I can create from every joint from regular body to many legs and/or arms or less. however you can tell a bit about them, there job, there abilities, and even maybe there attitude
early on I read about 1921, in Karel Capek’s play 'Rossum's Universal Robots'. from a hand out sheet it said  that the term “Robot” comes from the Czech for “forced labor.” These robots, were robots more in spirit than form, though They looked like humans.
this made me think about my research into Scott McClouds 'Comics THE INVISIABLE ART' were he says that us humans are very self centred, we see human faces, hands and forms in everything.
York quilters guild
when the York Quilters Guild came in they showed us various quilts from the past using scrap paper as reference for shapes, crazy quilts, English paper piecing quilts, cathedral window and artist quilts from modern day. I was interested in what stands as a quilt, I first thought of a metal quilt riveted together with fabric or rings. I've acid etched on metal before and would like to create something similar, a tapestry.
Concept Art
these 3 robots here were inspired by my own robots but also there versatility and many attachments, I wanted there jobs to vary from similarity. I chose law enforcement, construction and fishermen they were inspired by sectors of these jobs a bobby, a construction vehicle, a diving suit. I also though of a name for all of them that refers to the job or to there works, like 8088Y, builders BOT-M, and Artifishal.
UCAS Fair
York college and uni (3D practice BA) and Leeds Art UNI (comics and concept art)
Before the UCAS trip I went to Leeds Art University open day for comic and concept art, I found out that I really like it and know I would love doing it, but I'm torn between 3D crafts and comic/concept art, I want to do both of them and I figured out that 3D practice would be better since it would be very hard to do that work on the side e.g. equipment and lessons.
Comics, concept art and digital art are more easy to learn with resources, I'm also wondering if I will get the same 'MAD scientist' excitement from comics and concept art, as I get from 3D crafts ?
However I'm still torn, because of this realisation I didn't have many question during the fair ,except about portfolios.
Comics and concept art portfolio requires vivid ideas.
3D practices, will be easier since I've done a similar course and met the course leader many times.
