Onomatopoeia is a word that sounds like what it describes or imitates. In Japanese Onomatopoeia, there are words that imitate or mimic the sounds of things 擬音語 (Giongo)/ 擬声語 (Giseigo), actions 擬容語 (Giyougo), or feelings 擬態語 (Gitaigo) / 擬情語 (Gijougo). 

Japanese onomatopoeia are usually written in katakana or hiragana, and they can have different forms depending on how they are used in sentences.
