Packaging for Bobby Pins

Packaging Series for Bobby Pins

This was a project aimed at exploring Gestalt principles and applying them to a series of packaging. I began my process by arranging groups of bobby pins together and exploring similarity, proximity, continuation, and closure created by the interacting forms. After many renditions and sketches, I arrived at this design which demonstrates the principles of similarity, figure-ground relationships, proximity, and closure. This design yields the essence of bobby pins and how they are used in multiples to create a firm hold, and the result can be a beautiful and blooming organic structure.

The packages which house the pins are triangular prisms. The three-dimensional shape is sturdy, not easily collapsible, unlike cubes and cylinders. The strength of the structure correlates to the utility of the bobby pin. To further reinforce the idea of strength, the packages contain a magnetic strip on the inside edges to hold the bobby pins within their structures.
