This piece was a visual interpretation of Chisato’s haiku: ”Seeing the moon I feel these sorrows, by the thousands”. This piece aimed to express multiple emotions such as: loneliness, melancholy, uncertainty, peace, grief, disconnection, comfort and reflection with a glimmer of hope - all in which I had felt from the haiku after reading it. Because the central focus of the haiku was the moon, I used collage, mark-making and typography techniques to create a mysterious atmosphere which reinforces isolation and melancholy. The white paint dripping down from the bottom of the moon was created to personify the moon as if it was crying. This was because the moon is a metaphorical reflection of the human emotions, so I wanted the viewer to feel as though they were staring at their inner emotions when viewing this piece.
