I was inspired to make Chronic Illness for the prompt: modern vanitas.

Spoon theory is a way to illustrate the energy limitations that can result from living with a chronic illness. Using spoons as a unit of energy, spoon theory estimates how many spoons individual tasks require. It helps people coping with chronic illnesses visualize their total daily energy.

Spoon theory was the ultimate inspiration for my design, everything else was meant to supplement the concept. The two empty spoons have reflections of a skull and sit on the edge of the tray and table to emphasize visual tension.

The figure wears a hospital gown. The left arm has an IV attached, while the right has a watch and restraint.
Milky cereal, egg shells, and fruit symbolize our natural life cycle.
In addition, the tray has a juice box, pills, and jello on it.
