Complimentary Colors: non-binary

COMPLIMENTARY COLORS:
non-binary
This project uses a complimentary color scheme in an effort to highlight non-binary individuals and represent gender confusion, self-acceptance, and self-love and identity.

I used pink and green, which are complementary colours on a traditional colour wheel. I used a green and a pink light equally reflected on my subject, who is non-binary. For this project I wanted to highlight and celebrate non-binary individuals.
The color pink is traditionally associated with love and romance but can often represent femininity and softness. Green, on the other hand, is a color associated more typically to males, though blue is the more dominant association. I used green instead of blue as it also represents growth and renewal, which I also wanted to emphasize in the series.

In terms of the series, I wanted to illustrate a bit of a storyline, showing what it can be like for people who experience gender confusion as well as how they can evolve and gain acceptance, confidence, and a sense of self.
In the first photo, I tried to capture confusion or frustration, with the pink light being the most prominent as it related to my subject who was born female.
The second photo has the subject more centered and equally under green and pink light. The lack of eye contact with the camera lens, however, shows a lack of confidence and insecurity.
In the third photo, the subject has a bit more of a smirk and is looking at the camera. This alongside the image with the camera pointed up at the subject, show a growing confidence and sense of self.
The final picture has the subject centered and smiling. Both lights are spread equally over the subject. This represents self-acceptance and love.
