Momo - Tribute to Michael Ende
When I read for the first time "Momo, or the strange story of the time-thieves and the child who brought the stolen time back to the people" by Michael Ende (author also of the famous Neverending Story), I immediately loved it and decided to let me get inspired from this amazing novel and realize 5 illustrations for Bologna Children's Book Fair 2024 Illustrators Exhibition contest, where each illustration represents for me one of the best moments in the book.
I enjoy this project so much, that I'm going also to write soon a script and a storyboard to design an illustrated book inspired to the novel and present it to German publishers, as I think that Ende is the German father of fantasy novels.
I decided to experiment with a new technique for me, a collage made collecting some of the thousands papers and fabrics that I love to sample, and with very simple drawings, which I drew with markers: I really had a lot of fun with it, but most of all I spent TIME, a lot of time, both for designing the illustrations and then to animate them (it was not necessary for the contest, but collage made me discover the joy of transforming a still illustration into a lovely stop motion animation). Time is the theme of the book, time and love are the most important things of my life, of everyone's life, and I think that this book needs to be illustrated like this: with slow, lovely, materic illustrations.
Here you'll find the 5 videos, illustrations and some study sketches.
I hope you will enjoy them and their animations as much as I do!
That's all for now, folks!
But first, let me share with you some study sketches:
