•  Editorial Illustration   •
For this event we had to create a New Yorker editorial illustration based on an article we were given. My article featured a Kenyan innovator who created smart gloves capable of translating sign language into speech.
L E F T: initial pencil sketch of hand. I wanted to use a hand in order to signify the smart gloves that had been created
R I G H T: this image shows the final hand I used for the illustration. I painted the design with watercolour and scamped what I was thinking of doing around the illustration.
A B O V E: these scamps show the way I composed my editorial illustration. Before I could finalise the typography, I had to decide whether I preferred the image on the left, without any black space, or the illustration on the right, which included some black space in the top left corner.
•   Reflective Cycle   •
At the beginning of this event, I panicked the moment I heard we would have to incorporate our illustrations into a digital space. I knew my skills were poor, but I was determined to rather face this new aspect and learn how to be better than be paralysed by it.

For the first 2 weeks of this event, I couldn't truly get my mind out of the research phase and was very nervous to actually begin doing any vector illustrations. I felt that so many ideas and narratives would work with my topic that the scamping stage became incredibly overwhelming for me, as i was rushed with so many different ideas. However, I also feel I made a breakthrough in this event, even though it may be a small one. I really had to take a step back and simplify things, simply focusing on how I could seamlessly visually portray the article without overcomplicating it. I was so caught up in making the work unbelievably unique and fantastic rather than just getting to work.

I feel like I could most certainly have put more hours into this event, but the holiday in between completely pulled me out of the creative space I needed to be in.
