Golden Meaning Rationale

One of the famous Unite Kingdom publishing house GraphicDesign& invited me to take part in their second book GraphicDesign& Mathematics: Golden Meaning. [2013.4]

Golden Meaning Rationale
The essential appeal of the Golden Meaning brief was that it gave an opportunity not just to understand some aspects of golden ratio, but to visually represent or explore golden ratio from a new perspective. Personally, I wanted to avoid the usual impression of golden ratio, such as sunflower, galaxy, seashell and Mona Lisa etc. The visualization of the number itself is the main focus of my design.

In my design for Golden Meaning, I wanted to graphically express and display Phi by generative design approach. Definitely, Golden ratio is different from general digit. In other words, phi is irrational, which means the decimals keep on going forever, never repeating the same pattern. Therefore, we can know that the decimals generate by their own rules. I can use the rule as principle to guide my design. As a designer, I don’t want to distort the information (data) and really hope to take a chance to see how golden ratio could be visualized by its generate form.

When we look at phi, it can be divided into two parts that are units digit and decimals. Without doubt, my design should reflect this aspect, which caused me to use small circle to express unit and the big one to represent 500 decimals of phi. From my perspective, dividing a circle into 10 equal sections was the reasonable format to link those data. At the same time, you could find that there are lots of pentagrams and golden triangles in this circle, which can demonstrate the concept of golden ratio. The logical way of representing this data was to connect each number by sequence only. Finally, the opacity of each line was set up as 10%, then, people could understand the frequency of each number. And the right side demonstrated the process of 500 decimals.
