MADE FROM BANANAS

Banana Fibre, is an abundant agricultural byproduct, a sustainable and eco-friendly material.

India, as the largest producer of banana plantations, generates a significant amount of waste from cut stems.
The biodegradable fibre extracted from these stems possesses qualities resembling softness like silk and cotton, providing a natural sheen.

Traditionally, banana fibre found applications in mat-making, rope crafting, and traditional garments such as kimonos and kamishinos. Surprisingly, Japan's currency, the Yen, even incorporated banana fibre.

The fibre was extracted using anaerobic extraction technology, which separates the fibres and is later sun-dried. This process is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and gentle on the fibres.
To understand the material properties and strength of the fibre, experiments were conducted with natural indigo dyeing to observe absorption. The fibres were utilized in weaving the weft and creating variations through ikat patterns inspired by local influences.

The objective was to minimize social and ecological impacts, including carbon footprints, in textile production by leveraging local materials and exploring their potential.
