Experimental Materials Exploration
Textile waste have the lowest recovery rate compared to other wastes in Australia. Approximately 500k tones of this waste are discarded in landfill every year. Households contribute 90% of textile waste that is fed into landfill.  Experimental Materials Exploration seeks to upcycle household textile waste into "Sorbet" acoustic panels. Sorbet acoustic panels are made from 100% textile waste, paired with a highly biodegradable starch glue. Due to its construction, it can be easily recycled and reused, with a range of colours that are available through textile waste. An acoustic performance test was conducted and its outcomes demonstrate that Sorbet acoustic panels outperform EchoPanels and acoustic foam as a noise absorber. As Sorbet acoustic panels approaches their end of use, they will be collected, recycled, and replaced for a circular economy.
