Purnululu Time Lapse Project - May 2014

Purnululu Time Lapse Project 2014
In May this year  I was priviledged to be invited to participate in a National Time Lapse Project. This album documents our experience.
Now working out itineraries, logistics  and shoots another 3 week project in the Kimberley/Northern Territory in late August

Two weeks were spent planning the project and the shoots. A considerable degree of planning had to go into the logistics as well and a assistant was necessary for safety and to be able to get all the gear into the right places at the right time, expecially in the predawn darkness along rugged hiking tracks. In keeping with the requirments of the sponsor, and my knowledge of the Bungles I spent a long time looking at previous images I had in the Park and where the shadows would be  at various times of the day so that shooting locations could be planned and sequenced within the available time.
Google Earth and some great apps on the iPad enabled us to precisely plan when to start a sequence to cature the optimim effects of the shadows and light. This screen shot shows the planning at Echidna Chasm. Youcan see a shot from this sequence below.

Doing time lapse sequences from a helicopter is a bit of an ask!  Great way to get to work though. Thanks to Kimberley Outback Tours for the sponsership of the helicopter.

Finally on location it was a case of hoping that all the planning would come together, and it was a bit of a relief to start the real business of the project.

Sequence 3 with the telephoto, was over 500 images, lasted more than 1 1/2 and didn't conclude till dark.
Hard yakka getting all the gear on site too!

One thing about time lapse shoots once setup you get timeout, however you dont find out if it worked  until weeks later, or can be ruined by someone walking up in front of the camera for a chat. Oh Well, do it again tomorrow!

Our accomodation was sponsored by APT Wilderness Camp, and was a welcome break and sleep after 14 hour days.
It is amazing that 2 weeks planning, 1 week on location, 8,500 images over 13 sequences edited down results in just 1 minute 10 seconds of  super HD Video
Stay tuned for the public release.
