Perfect Fit Protection

TIMELINE: 3 weeks
GROUP PROJECT: Maria Bowman and I
OBJECTIVE: Design a one-of-a-kind safety device that fits our partner's anatomy using various tools, including 3D scanning technology. Then, use reference imagery to create strategic visualizations to showcase your design.
instructed by: Will Nickley
Research & References:
In researching safety equipment, I found a lack of equipment for female go-kart racers. Off to the right is one of the few pieces I found explicitly designed for women in go-karting. I took inspiration from this piece to design my own custom rib and spine protection for my partner, Maria.
When looking for reference photos, I didn't find the exact images I wanted to use, so I cut together some to make the three photos on the far left
I also took inspiration from the cartoon character Shego because Maria had green and black hair at the time. I found this fan art and decided to use it for inspiration.
Tool Chain:
For this project, I challenged myself to utilize a variety of different software that I had experience with. Here is the order in which I decided to use the software.
3D Scanning & Fusion360:
Using photogrammetry technology, I was able to take 3D scans of Maria's torse. I then took that scan in Fusion360 and cleaned it up to make the mesh form you see to the left.
Gravity Sketch:
I brought in the scanned form and used Gravity Sketch to sketch out what I wanted the gear to look like. I then built the protection gear piece by piece using my sketches and Gravity Sketch's mannequin as references.
Nomad Sculpt:
Using Nomad, I added straps and the front velcro clasp (used to take on and off the equipment and tighten it to the body) to connect the different pieces.
Keyshot:
In Keyshot, I was able to add color and materials to the different pieces and then position the safety gear and cameras to take render specific shoots.
Sketchbook & Procreate:
Finally, I used sketchbook and procreate to combine the renderings and add additional details and callouts. These photos were captured halfway through the process of adding the final touches.
Final DELIVERABLES:
After adding the final details, I presented these three visuals of She-Go to the class.
