Something Old, Something New

My wedding dress was a very special project for me. I wanted it to reflect my style, my family, and my values. I'm happy to say that this dress accomplished all of this.

I designed my gown completely, through draping, flat pattern, and trial and error. It is uniquely my style, including the fact that it is actually two pieces, a romper and a skirt.

My family is well represented in this dress, with parts from two dresses worn by three wonderful women in my family. My grandmother's dress, also worn by my aunt, provided the beautiful buttons down the back of my gown. My mother's dress, which was blue, became a heart on the inside of my gown: my something blue.

Some things that I am very passionate about are re-purposing, recycling, and reducing waste. So I am proud to say that my wedding dress is not only made from my mother's and grandmother's wedding dresses, but also from lots of beautiful sheer and lace curtains that I collected from garage sales and thrift stores. It is extremely fulfilling to give new life to an old but still beautiful object, and such a great way to symbolically start my own new life.
