Ruth Wein's profile

Built Environment

These works depict my relationship with the built environment - both inside and outside. To me, buildings and urban landscapes tell a story - of individuals, of families, of communities, and often of the state of the world. I love to capture such sights at a moment in time and let them tell their own story.
Vietnam: Hanoi Heights (2023): White Acrylic Marker on Black Card 21cm x29cm

This work was drawn during an en plein air exercise while on an art study tour in Vietnam. The weather was stiflingly hot, so the group chose to draw the outside from the inside. This was drawn from the breakfast room of the sixth floor of the hotel we were staying in
Vietnam: Hanoi Breadths (2023): White Acrylic Marker on Black Card 21cm x29cm

This work was an exercise in en plein air drawing and was drawn while sitting outside the hotel I stayed in during the art study tour
Royal Parade, Parkville (2022): Mixed Media (Coloured and black Ink and Background Transparency) on Arche Paper

I spent a lot of time in Parkville, Melbourne in my youth and was inspired by the old residential architecture. The background is an old plan of the area.

Robin Boyd's House: Interior Series (2021): Collage, Pen and Ink, Graphite on card each 14.85cm x 21cm

I always admired the work of Robin Boyd, the Australian architect. This series was a tribute to him and was inspired by my visit to his house in South Yarra, Melbourne.
Gazing out from a Bosnian Church (2021). Oils on Canvas 40.5cm x 50.5cm

Creative Process: I began my creative process by painting an underlayer of pyrrole orange and red oxide to create greater depth. I then drew my outline in pencil before applying the oil paints in the order shown
