Sarabande (a slow dance in triple meter)

Sarabande (a slow dance in triple meter)

A seven layered silkscreen print, edition of 26, for the Comunidad/Identidad: Oaxaca x Wheaton print portfolio, February 2022. A palimpsest about excavating the ideas of home, identity, and community through generationally significant musical imagery.
Since I was a child, music has provided a profound way to connect with history and to discover my identity. This piece is a sort of palimpsest: seven physical layers of ink create a surface that appears torn, scratched, and excavated. The house I grew up in and where my parents lived for over forty years was recently demolished. I decided to transform exposed plaster lath into the keys of a piano, as the piano has been central to my concept of home and community. Finally, resting on my temple is the “Diapason” stop (a swelling burst of harmony) from my great grandmother’s 1893 pump organ.
