The Menagerie: Search Engine Variations Continued

Over the years Google has added further customization features to its image search. One of the more recent features is a time-based search. For seven days I tracked both the 24-hour image search query and the default search query. The two large paintings in the exhibition used the two queries as a subsequent formal mapping. Each image was reduced to a rectangular block of color that was dictated by the most dominant color found within the image.
Stilllife_017 (The Schuylkill, Condalisa, outer space, the flood), 2014, 30 x 22 in, watercolor on paper

The Stilllife works on paper began by gathering images from the search query and printing them out at their actual size rather than display size.  These image prints were mounted to individually cut pieces of foam core that correspond to their print size. The digital images became transformed into literal building blocks that could be physically rearranged. I used these stacked image/objects to serve as a still life to paint form.
Compression (39 pages and counting), 2014, 16 x 20 in, digital print on enhanced archival matte paper

This piece consists of every sheet of image
Baggage, 2014, size variable, digital prints on fabric and thread, 10 piece installation

Baggage is comprised of 10 enclosed pouches.  These pieces are made from digital prints of a later image search conducted for the phrase “no comment”. The sheets of images are printed on transparent fabric. These pieces are deflated shells that bare the image as a transparent flaccid skin that lacks a skeletal structure.
