Books can turn your world on its head. They have the power to transport you to
any place and time, and to show the world as seen through other people's eyes.

Five book boxes aim to demonstrate these and other effects. Every cover has a quote, a piece of wisdom which relates to the content of the box. Various mirror effects are implemented to symbolise abstract concepts: a concave mirror turns your reflection upside-down, a plain mirror makes you notice something right above your head, the use of an infinity mirror effect evokes a gate to another world...

Experiencing life from someone else's point of view.

Recognising patterns in the world, your own life or behaviour. The more you know, the more you notice.

Surprise or awe followed by understanding.

A literary gate to any time and place.

Drawing our attention to the presence of truths we may have been ignorant of all along.
Above the display there is a poster stuck to the ceiling, unnoticed, until the spectator is made aware upon opening the last book box with its plain mirror.

'Sapere aude' ( = 'dare to know' / 'dare to think for yourself' ) was cited by Immanuel Kant as motto for the enlightenment movement. Educating yourself and being able to take a critical view thus was presented as a form of self-liberation. With the perpetual distraction of consumption cycles and the media filter on world affairs, this still is relevant today.
In short: books are awesome.
