I made functional scissors out of filed, painted, and laquered brass. My "wooden" puppet is carved out of paper clay on a brass armature. I made hinge joints using small screws and nuts, and swiveling dowels for the shoulders and neck. See below for the armature building process.
I carefully painted all the woodgrain in the room. There isn't a single thing in this shot that is actually made from the material it appears to be.
