A Fid is a traditional Maritime tool used to separate and hold apart strands of rope (or "lays") for splicing.
The individual strands of Walnut are hand shaped into a subtle curve, gently breaking the solidity of the surface and highlighting the unique grain and texture of each carefully selected piece. The Fid Bench uses this moment, where the strands of wood are pulled apart, to entice interaction, creating a soft touchable surface.

The watery grain of the walnut is directed so that it "pools" on the legs, where the bench meets the ground.
