Surreal Board Game Design

Inspiration: Cheryl Laemmle's "Self-Portrait with Bottle and Cage", a piece that revolves around her childhood memories.

Story: A woman has surpressed certian memories, (expressed as fragmented puzzle pieces in my board game), but desires to search them back in order to reach a catharsis. Players will travel across the steps (pigtail segments) that form an infinity loop. The game will not end until a certain player achieves a complete memory - that is, four fragments that complete a picture. Along the way are obstacles, such as losing cards, or lives. (see movable death meter as below.)

Made with coloured paper, and gouache.
Unfolding the boardgame. I deliberately chose a very simple design for the packaging, with just enough information to make people curious. Within the package is a pop-up book that represents the theme of entrapped, suppressed memories.
Main component of my very own pop-up book that was created through trial and error.
Paper clay for tiny miniatures that appear in the game to reinforce the surreal environment.
Instruction booklet presented as an old diary.
Players are represented as characters from Laemmel's paintings. Made with paper clay.
The aim was to make the board game take the spectator into this surreal world.
The "Death Meter", that players face if landing on certain steps in the game.
The "puzzle cards", and the spinner that determines the amount of steps for players.
Little popup books are also placed within the board game, often with special instructions.
