Brief summary
Students are required to create a horizontal/panoramic layout that illustrates, photographically, a narrative highlighting one or more of the above qualities (shape, texture pattern, colour, and tonal values). The sequence should not have a literal or 'obvious' story. It should remain an abstract piece. You need to be able to see it and immediately understand the visual sequence. The idea is that you photograph, edit but then also curate a narrative as a 'concept' for the viewer (using photography only). This will be a handy tool for you in the future, to use photography as a storytelling medium.
Deliverables
Your layout should consist of five images: three documentary and two fashion images. Please use the following guide on what constitutes a documentary and fashion photo for this project:
1. Fine art documentary photography: Combining the aesthetic and the real. Your goal is to create visually striking, or simply beautiful images that document everyday things but also convey a possible narrative or express a point of view.
2. Fashion photography: Fashion photography can be described as a form of artistic expression that uses clothing, accessories, and the human form as its medium. It is an opportunity for photographers to experiment with creative concepts, play with light and shadow, and explore different perspectives.
Design strategy
The golden thread of the final deliverable is broken pattern that ultimately also creates texture. The first image in the curation was found when I went on a run one afternoon. I saw that this large screw had been imbedded into and breaks the pattern and texture of the tar road. The second image is a fashion image, this is a picture of my sister taking off her jersey. Her hands interfere with the pattern on the jersey and the jeans and leafs in the background form a contrasting texture. The third image was found at a restaurant when I noticed that the wooden fence in the background forms a pattern that is interfered with by the wire instrument hanging over it in the front. The fourth image was also found while on a walk. This plant stood out completely beneath the rest of the landscape, but the part that grabbed my attention was the flower surrounded by bees. The last image is one that was taken of a friend with stacked roof tiles in the background. The roof tiles ultimately form some sort of pattern that is also being broken by her bare legs standing in the foreground.
