Modern Artifacts
The concept of artifact is applied here as a nod to my childhood and all the trinkets I have collected over the years. This project consists of two clay plates that have small objects such as dices, crayons and Legos left into it. It is truly a personal piece, because each object has a specific memory/experience attached to it. In this project I also reflect on my roots by bringing my mother’s baby teeth in the clay. My grandfather kept them all of those years, because he has difficulty letting go of material possessions. My mom, as a response to her father’s actions, has no problem getting rid of objects that no longer serve a purpose. As a now grown individual, I try to find the balance between the hoarding behavior of my grandfather and the minimalist lifestyle of my mother. This project is about where I come from and where I am going as an artist. The objects were selected for their memory-inducing factor and on their color to create a coherent piece. They are all a materialization of my reality.
