WOMEN'S TRANSITIONAL FACILITY

WOMEN'S TRANSITIONAL FACILITY

Brief: This Project is a design for a Women’s Transitional Facility and associated landscape in
Red Hill, Brisbane. The function of a Transitional Facility is to rehabilitate female
prisoners and support their successful reintegration into society. Programmatically, a
Transitional Facility includes everything necessary for everyday life, and hence
operates akin to a micro city. Considering the building as a city, the building’s various
connections to the city itself and city systems, along with the social and psychological
complexity that is synonymous with such a brief, the project presents inherent
complexity. A successful proposition will not only deliver a building, but will
demonstrate an understanding of city systems and the building’s relationship to these
systems. In fact, the building perhaps might be thought of as composed of a number of systems itself – infrastructural, formal, social, political and ecological.
