Exploring Future Textiles
Textiles 3 - Assessment 1 - 2023 (UNSW)

Exploring Future Textiles was the base concept for this project. Following Sustainable Development Goal 12, (responsible consumption and production), I have developed and worked with the speculative question, What If The Textile Industry Was Driven By Hand-Craft? This question led to my inspiration, experimentation and discovery in finding ways in which craft can be utilised to produce sustainable textile products. Hand-craft is a form of slow-making and contradicts the unsustainable methodologies of fast-fashion. The crafting of textiles has been practiced for centuries by many cultures. The Indian textile industry in particular supports the creation of hand-crafted textiles, and focuses on recycling, renewing and repurposing already existing textiles to enhance their value and minimise textile waste.

If we can revitalise hand-craft within mainstream textile production, we would be able to achieve longevity and preservation of life. In this project, I experimented with many materials and methods that could be the textiles of the future. I focused on already existing textiles, and enhancing them with techniques such as hand embroidery, crochet and the integration of bioplastics. Considering these techniques led to the development and exploration of what textiles might look like in the future, specifically for luxury fashion and furnishing based textiles.
