Recycled Plastic Possibilities

Exploring Sustainable Future Textiles // Student Lead Brief
Millions of tonnes of plastic waste are estimated to enter the earth’s oceans every year. The last 50 years has seen an explosion of plastic used across all industries, with only a fraction being recycled.

Line of inquiry:
Recycling plastics into textile material is predominantly made by melt-spinning plastics in to fibres. While efficient, creative solutions to implement more recycled plastics into useful and dynamic materials are needed to reduce the use of virgin materials and the sheer amount of plastic waste that goes unmanaged.

How can we expand upon non-melt-spun plastic recycling to be used structurally, functionally and decoratively, in textiles applications?

In line with the Ellen Macarthur Foundation’s Vision of a circular economy for fashion the experimental sample collection explores possibilities in a few key aspects of circularity in textiles: Design for disassembly, Durability, Repairability, and Recycle.
