My motif was to create a series of 4 tonal drawings to illustrate a human-sized chunck of petrified root that had been donated to the RISD Nature lab in Providence, Rhode Island. I was struck by the mass of this wood, and drawn by its distinct details and textures. Using the expressive nature of charcoal and elusive nature of water, (and with the help of dramatic lighting), I depicted the powerful twisting forms, scarred texture and the dynamic of this once living organism.
Throughout the series, the drawings progress from textural exploration, to realistic tonal renderance.
Layering from the repeating process of drawing. washing away with water, and drying was a crucial process.
