From Neptune to Wood Island / The Greenway Connector

A team of two people collaboratively work to develope a new plan for the Greenway connector in East Boston, a connector, which links the Neptune Green (sited next to the MBTA blue, Wood Island Station) to the Overlook at Wood Island Marsh. Collaboration with Jenarmi Contreras (B. Arch., '15)

As we work together to propose new designs for the connecting path from the Neptune Green to the Overlook, each person takes each site to design a gallery pavilion at the Neptune Green and a playscape at the Overlook.

The temporary pavilion at the Neptune Green that I have chosen to design is for sound arts that both artists and non-artist users can participate to install.  Landscape with path, gallery bar with temporary storage for food and drinks, and benches (with and without shading structures) are the programs in the gallery pavilion.

Narrative Proposal

STOP the noise.
PAUSE for the sound.
PLAY the tone.

PLAY! PAUSE, STOP..
This idea of play, pause, stop link three parts of the site: the train station, the Neptune Green (pavilion), and the Overlook (playscape). Pavilion becomes the pausing area where people can stop by and enjoy different moments of art gallery. The noise from the train station can be mitigated by the bamboo, which will be used as a noise barrier system of the site, but the noise can also be used as a part of sound installation. People would have chance to be away from the noise ("STOP"), be "PAUSED" for awhile to enjoy different programs in the temporary pavilion, and be led through the path and reach the overlook where the playscape ("PLAY") waits.
Within the bamboo noise barrier, the playful elements will be blended throughout the path with sound installations/instruments that will provide the tones so that people can be interactively engaged in the site.

PAUSE
Four parts of "pause" - Relax, Transition, Moments, and Surrounding
-Benches throughout the lattice structure provide spaces for people to relax.
-Pavilion is a transition point where peole would be led back to the path and to the Overlook.
-Different moments of space will be provided through open wall system using lumbers.
-The see-through structure will allow people to have better and stronger interaction with surrounding landscape and different gallery and programmatic spaces.

The structure of the pavilion is mainly of 2x4 and 2x6 lumbers.
The orientation of lumbers is simply be vertical and horizontal, creating orthagonal system.
