Cochran Handwriting typeface

  • Here’s an improbable but charming collaboration: a new comic written by Rashida Jones and illustrated by Josh Cochran, in Glamour magazine. To give the comic a personal touch—while also accommodating last-minute editorial changes—Josh asked me to design a custom typeface, based on his handwriting.
Small text in word bubbles called for a tidy but quick style of writing. For a natural appearance, four versions of each letter alternate automatically. Stylistic variants for some characters (such as the looped g and y) give the option to shift the tone slightly. To give the Cochran Handwriting smoother edges than in most auto-traced faces, the design was based on samples written on a Cintiq digital tablet, rather than using auto-traced scans.
