Churches of Catanduanes

Catanduanes is an island province in the eastern part of the Philippines’ Bicol region. The island has been dubbed the “Land of the Howling Winds” because of its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Now, with its new branding, “Happy Island,” Catanduanes poises itself as an emerging tourist destination in the country. Aside from its natural landscapes, among the treasures found on the island are its old churches.

Below are some of the notable churches of Catanduanes.

Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows of Batong Paloway, San Andres, Catanduanes
The church of Batong Paloway is a prominent religious site in Catanduanes. Located at Brgy. Batong Paloway in the town of San Andres, the chapel houses the revered icon of Our Lady of Sorrows. It is also a popular pilgrimage site among Catanduanons.
St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, San Andres, Catanduanes
San Andres, aside from being the gateway of Catanduanes to the mainland Bicol, is also known for its church. The century-old structure, considered one of the oldest stone churches on the island, is located at the town’s Poblacion or center.

Parish of Mary, Mother of the Church, Antipolo, Virac, Catanduanes
A quiet settlement in the northern part of Virac is also home to a Spanish-colonial church. Perched on top of a hill, the church of Brgy. Antipolo is another popular pilgrimage site in Catanduanes.
