Geisha : Handmade Japanese Paper

Using traditional methods of separating fibres from barks of the mulberry tree
(Japanese kozo). We beat the fibres  and  after boiling them we used a mould and deckle
(su-keta) to churn out  sheets of handmade paper. We also experimented with non traditional methods and hand produced Abaca paper (white circular paper seen above)

These sheets of  paper were used to  craft and sculpt a Japanese Geisha. Here I worked on detailing four aspects. Firstly the flower on the head with twisted paper, wire and pins             (top left).Second (top right) an umbrella with pen details and wooden sticks, wire and an abaca paper cut outs for the top. Third  (bottom left) I sketched a detailed peacock motif in black ink which is synonymous with Japanese Geisha robes. Fourth (bottom right) I used the handmade Abacca cut outs  and glue to create the base.
