Umbanda is a Brazilian religion that blends spiritual African religions with Catholicism. Umbanda originated amongst the slaves in Brazil during the colonial period. The beliefs include the existence of only one God and many OrixĆ”s (sometimes called spirits) which are a manifestation of God. YemanjĆ”, identified with the Virgin Mary, is one of the more popular OrixĆ”s. Each year the faithful, dressed in traditional white robes, meet at the beach to make offerings to the Godess of the sea. The ceremonies include prayers, music, song and dance. The faithful smoke cigarettes and cigars and drink herbal infusions sometimes entering into a state of trance. During these ceremonies the guidesĀ are able to channel information from the spirit worldĀ while theyĀ carry out spiritual cleansing of the faithful.

As crenƧas incluem a existĆŖncia de um sĆ³ Deus e muitos OrixĆ”s (Ć s vezes referidos como divindades ou espĆritos) que sĆ£o uma manifestaĆ§Ć£o de Deus. YemanjĆ”, que se identifica com a Virgem Maria, Ć© um dos OrixĆ”s mais populares. Todos os anos os fiĆ©is, vestidos tradicionalmente de branco, encontram-se na praia para entregar oferendas Ć sua Deusa do mar. As cerimĆ³nias nos terreiros geralmente incluem oraƧƵes, ovaƧƵes, cantares e danƧas. Com frequĆŖncia, os fiĆ©is fumam cigarros ou charutos, e bebem uma mistura Ć base de ervas, ocorrendo episĆ³dios de estados de transe.
