UNRAVELED! (2023)
Yarn, Plywood, Arduino, Ultrasonic Sensor, DC Motors

UNRAVELED! explores the disproportionate relationship between the creation and destruction of content, focusing particularly on the deterioration and death of memetics. This is most evident in the rapid consumption of content, especially those which showcase the time-consuming and slow process of creating a work. As the attention spans of consumers grow ever shorter, creators resort to rapidly producing bite-sized edited content to maintain online engagement, even if it means devaluing and not being able to enjoy the hard work they have painstakingly put into their creations.

In UNRAVELED!, an entire month’s worth of knitting is destroyed within a day and sped up in this minute long video, just so that viewers such as yourself can quickly see the effects of consumers on the work. Viewers who have seen the work in real life have control over the speed at which the work is unwound. The set up of the mechanised coffin is reminiscent of a funeral wake. As they approach the artwork, the sensor along the coffin detects the closing distance and motors within will start spinning. The spool attached to the motors will unravel the handmade piece, feeding the coffin with its remains and sealing the demise of the work. Viewers will play their part in causing the death and destruction of the artwork before their very eyes.
