I intended to explore the contradictions between growth and decay. Having experimented with different ways of creating a narrative for my photography, I decided that I wanted to create a film using my photographs that could show images of growth and decay at the same time in order to highlight their paradoxical nature.
I was inspired by the work of Paul Graham and how he presents his work, in a particular way that grabs the audience's attention. Images are presented at different sizes and can be irregular however, he maintains a presence of rhythm throughout. I was also inspired by the kind of images he uses which lead me to focus on photographing the everyday.
I also looked at the work of Douglas Gordon which inspired me to reconsider how my films would be viewed. Douglas Gordon used two screens that were positioned at different angles, which created a contrast between the videos he was showing. Not only does it divide them more clearly, it also changes the alignment to make them seem more like opposites. I have decided to present my film at angles so that the viewer can stand between them. This will intensify the juxtaposition of growth and decay.
After looking at these two artists I began to rearrange and edit my pictures. I have seperated them into categories of opposites, such as life and death, fruitfulness and aridity; after looking at these two artists I began to rearrange and edit colour, tones and the story of each image so that they had more of an impact than before. After completing this I could see more of a flow between images, with the still image placed at the end of each series emphasising the dichotomy of growth and decay.
I began to experiment with how I was to go about editing the alignment. I still wanted to use a single projector, so I began using a different program that allowed me to add 3D effects to my videos, which meant I could project the two films perpendicular to each other.
Overall I am happy with the final result. The order of images and alignment of images is effective. I believe that the film is successful in showing the paradoxical relationship between growth and decay, opposites which coexist in all our lives. I think that displaying the two films so that the viewer is almost surrounded by them intensifies the experience and helps to communicate that growth and decay are an inescapable part of the human condition.
