Group research video made during phase one of Births, Deaths & Marriages project, our groups focus was Death where we looked at the trade of funeral directors. The video shows highlighted quotes taken from interviews with local funeral directors. Their expectations, predictions and opinions about a life dealing with death.
I also looked at spaces which were excavated in the city, building works seemed to pose a opportunity. Modern regulations for new buildings require deep foundations, which I deemed to be not used to their full potential. I proposed to use this ‘dead space’ to bury the dead.
The project posed interesting questions about what we consider a asting monument or a place of rest. How would these buildings be treat? Could we demolish them as easily? It posed an interesting question when we consider the temporality of modern buildings, and their ever shortening life span.

My final proposal was for a ‘foundation burial’, or a ‘home burial’. This would combine the need for burial space with the space left in new building foundations.
