House MGV
Hamar, Norway

The idea behind this dwelling was to create a holistic environment: a house which offers spatial experiences in everyday life with spaces to sleep in, eat, dream, read and create in addition to a productive garden where vegetables can be grown and the rhythms of nature can be experienced at home. The primary living room, the kitchen and a studio room are placed on ground level with direct connections to the outside. Lamps from Studio Makhno float like clouds over a large sitting area with double ceiling height. Various bedrooms are positioned on the second floor, where they enjoy sunlight from both the east and the south.

The site lies in a typical suburban environment, surrounded by wood houses and gardens on all sides. The house’s simple external form merges nearly unnoticed with the surroundings, and does not at first sight give a sign of the inner spaces’ unusual character. The concrete walls which enclose the garden visually define the garden room and create the feeling of dwelling in one’s own world, where the surroundings disappear into the background and the sky becomes the loft. The environment’s sheltered atmosphere is strengthened with new trees.
