OZ BOOK SERIES CHARACTER REDESIGN

For this redesign project, I had to choose a character from L. Frank Baum's Oz books and create original character art based on the character's description. I chose the character Ojo, known as Ojo the Unlucky, who first appeared in "The Patchwork Girl of Oz". I was drawn to him because of his blue colour scheme and unique outfit.

CONCEPTION DE PERSONNAGE DES LIVRES D'OZ

Pour ce projet de redessin, je devais choisir un personnage des livres d’Oz, une série de romans par L. Frank Baum, et je devais créer un dessin de personnage original basé sur sa description. J’ai choisi le personnage de Ojo, aussi appelé Ojo le Malchanceux, qui est apparu premièrement dans le livre “The Patchwork Girl of Oz”. J’ai été attiré par son schéma de couleurs bleu et ses vêtements uniques.

I began by quickly drawing silhouettes of Ojo in order to find a strong character profile. I paid special attention to the bells around the rim of his hat, since I found them to be a key component of his character design.
J’ai commencé par dessiner rapidement des silhouettes de Ojo pour trouver un profil fort. J’ai prêté une attention particulière aux cloches autour de son bord du chapeau, parce que c’est un élément important de son image.

Then I took my favourite silhouettes and expanded them into sketches, keeping in mind the youthful feel of the character. For the aesthetic, I wanted to cross the fantastical fantasy of Oz with the retro sci fi aesthetic of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was specifically inspired by the character of Wesley Crusher.
Après, j’ai pris mes silhouettes préférées et je les ai mises au point en croquis, en gardant en tête la jeunesse du personnage. Je voulais que l'esthétique soit un mélange de la fantaisie de l’Oz et de la science-fiction rétro de Star Trek : La Nouvelle Génération. En particulier, j’ai été inspiré par le personnage de Wesley Crusher.

After choosing my favourite design, I sketched out a front and back model sheet for Ojo. Then I did a clean line art version.
Après avoir choisi ma conception préférée, j’ai dessiné une fiche modèle avec le devant et le dos de Ojo, puis après j’ai fait un dessin au trait.

Finally, after much time spent colouring, shading, and retouching, the model sheet was done. I reinterpreted the bells around the rim of his hat as glowing orbs, and added other elements that glowed as well. The gold stitching was a final detail; since the character is described as being unlucky and rather clumsy, I thought his clothes would often catch on branches and tear. The gold stitching therefore is both functional repairs to his outfit, as well as decorative embroidery he would have added when he was bored.
