European Commission staff will no longer be able to use TikTok on their work phones.
The elimination of the Chinese-owned app will serve to
"protect the Commission's data and increase its cybersecurity"
Although the vast majority of the most widely used sites and apps in the West over the past two decades belong to U.S.-based companies, which over time have often shown little concern for the handling of their users' personal data, critics of TikTok say the difference lies in the fact that Chinese companies have a much closer relationship with their government than American companies. In the context of China's growing economy and political influence in the world, several Western governments and institutions are deciding to take action to safeguard their data.
