The Thinworld Phantasy is a series of single-player adventure zines I created and designed. Targeted to an older generation of fantasy gamers, I wanted to capture the aesthetic and wonder of 70s and 80s fantasy, particularly the rotoscoped fantasy films of Ralph Bakshi.
I animated two trailers for The Thinworld Phantasy: a teaser trailer and a narrative trailer for the first zine of the series. By using traditional rotoscoping techniques I captured the feel of Bakshi’s fantasy films, and by using limited CMYK palettes for characters they aesthetically match fantasy art of that era.
Although I used digital collage for the teaser trailers’ backgrounds, I made a physical diorama for the narrative trailer, which I photographed and edited to fit the rotoscoped animation style, as well as linking things visually to table-top gaming.
The trailers were praised in indie TTRPG circles, successfully playing on the target audience’s nostalgia and making them want to see more of this strange world.
