The design tackles the dilemma of the ‘large’ school by organising students within seven discrete SWIS (School Within a School) buildings that promote the students’ sense of familiarity and ownership. Defined outdoor spaces on the sunny northern edges of each SWIS building offer localised sites for learning and recreation.

 

The project also provides the case study for the AGBR ‘GreenStar’ education pilot. Extensive planning, consultation and computer modelling have allowed for key ESD initiatives including air tempering, water collection and re-use, improved natural lighting, environmentally preferable materials, building waste management, and active monitoring and display of building performance to aid ongoing research.
