Endangered

Endangered is a handmade vase inspired by the human-wildlife conflict in Sri Lanka, specifically concerning the leopard and elephant populations which are endemic to the country.

According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (ICUN) due to the human-wildlife conflict approximately 250 elephants and 80 people die in Sri Lanka each year. The Sri Lankan leopard also appears on the ICUN Red List which acknowledges the species as being endangered. Additionally, Sri Lanka currently ranks as the country with the world’s worst human-elephant conflict in the world, with 300-400 elephants being killed annually.

The representation of the leopards and elephants in tight clusters resembles human encroachment into wildlife territory. The vase was created using engobes and underglazes on white earthenware. The drawings of the leopard and elephant clusters are done using the carbon print technique. The vase was then glazed using clear glaze and finished with gold lustre haloing the animal clusters.
