Graphic Design Studio III: NERR Logo

NERR Project

For Graphic Design Studio III our entire semester was dedicated to creating a logo and brand identity for the Bay of Green Bay NERR.

NERR, or the National Estuarine Research Reserve is an organization that is focused on research and education on the estuary. A new reserve is going to be established near the Bay of Green Bay, and they required new and unique branding.

Above details my process of creating a logo. The top three options are my original logo designs. All of them involve a whole or partial map as one of the important elements of NERR is being place-based, meaning that despite being a national organization they take into account the local community of the reserve is a part of. I also decided to convey this through the depiction of local plants and animals (such as ducks, geese, and cattails). After my critique I created some alternate ideas to further develop these ideas. The next section shows the development of the color palette, based on various concepts such as complimentary colors or analogous colors. I opted to use a complimentary color palette because blue is a natural way to convey water and using an orange hue to appear striking. I also utilize mockups to present potential ways that these logos could be applied to tangible items, such as pens and business cards in addition to exploring how this could be used on a website.
