Ozone and other gases are diffused through a diffusion membrane onto a sensing electrode. The control circuit maintains a voltage between the sensing electrode and the counter electrode sufficient to start the chemical reaction, and the electrochemical reaction generated in the presence of ozone forms a current between the two electrodes.

The intensity of this current is proportional to the concentration of ozone and is reversible. The control circuit also creates a bias level between the sense and counter electrodes, a level that does not create a current between the two poles, and the sensor's fast response allows it to provide real-time continuous detection of the surrounding air.
